We have received the sad news of the death of Professor Alphonse Humbert, C.Ss.R. After a protracted illness Father Humbert died on January 5, 2004 in Saint Etienne, France.
Professor Humbert was born on October 10, 1919 in Saulxures, France. He professed his religious vows as a Redemptorist on October 15, 1939 and was ordained a priest on July 16, 1944. Father Humbert continued his studies after ordination and in 1947 earned a Doctorate in Theology from the Catholic University of Lyon France. IN 1948 he received a Licentiate in Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. From 1948 until 1957 he taught sacred scripture in the Redemptorist Seminary in Sousceyrac, France. In 1957, Father Humbert joined the teaching faculty of the Alphonsian Academy as a professor in the Department of Sacred Scripture and remained in this ministry until his retirement in 1994. In addition to his work at the Academy, Father Humbert taught at the Regina Mundi Pontifical Institute and at the Pontifical Gregorian University from 1971 until 1977.
